Recording Cell Phone Conversations with Zoom H4

Submitted by Dallan Wright on July 5, 2007 – 9:02 pmNo Comment

I thought I would share here how I record my cell phone conversations. I’ve tried in the past to use Skpe as my recording medium, but I’ve found it difficult to get together with those I want to converse with. We never seem to have the right schedule. I had the brilliant idea to do my podcast on my way to work. I’m just sitting there listening to the radio anyways. So now Jon and I talk-and-drive. Yes, I look like an idiot traveling down the road with a mic to my mouth, but it works great for recording two tracks.

The picture illustrates how it happens. I have my mike plugged into one xlr jack of the Zoom H4 portable recorder. In the other I have plugged in my cell phone. I did it by cutting up a pair of old headphones and wiring it to my phones ear/mic bud. That way the person I call can hear me through the cellphone mic, but my voice is being recorded by the much better mic. You can see the cell mic duct-taped to my other mic. I sound confusing. Hopefully the diagram helps.
