OPINION: “Hyping the Hog”

It’s amazing what people will stand in line for.  Cheap DVD players from Walmart, iPhones from Apple, or any episode of Star Wars no matter how awful they were.  When a line starts, we Americans jump at the chance to extend it by one, and thus the cycle continues. Now we have another type of line growing in this country.

Swine flu is real, and I know plenty of people are sick because of it. What I don’t understand is the hysteria whenever it is discussed, and the ensuing resultst. Nancy Synderman, Chief Medical Editor for NBC news, has stirred the paranoia pot with her recent appearances on The Today Show. Whenever she’s covering the H1N1 topic, Dr. Synderman has this concerned and emphatic look on her face I more closely associate with someone having just escaped the clutches zombies, and wants to warn everyone she comes across to stay away from the cemetery.

It’s no wonder people line up like cattle to take a shot, regardless of the fact less people have died than most every other cause on the planet.  Heart disease tops the list of worldwide deaths while Swine Flu just barely beat out Leprosy.  The interesting graph demonstrating this is here… and it shows how hype and hysteria beat out rational thought any day of the week.  Helicopters hovering over people waiting in flu shot lines don’t help either.
