Add a child to the mix and that feeling is multiplied by a factor of two. With life speeding along we focus our time on the realities in front of us, and sometimes we let very important things slip away. What am I talking about? I'm suggesting we don't take enough time preserving our family history for our children and grandchildren. I love audio and I love my family. Because of that I wanted to share with you a way of preserving your family history for the ages other than the traditional journal entry. (Check out my example at the bottom of this post). 1) Grab a digital recorder.nbsp; You can spend a lot of money on equipment, but even the little digital business voice recorders can do a great job.nbsp; I recorded this interview of my grandparents using the Zoom H4 and two external mics, but you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars.nbsp; For around $30 you can get a little Olympus recorder from Amazon and you'll be in recording business.nbsp; If you want to go nuts I suggest the Zoom H2... you see it being used a lot by professional reporters. 2) Write down your questions and review them beforehand.nbsp; You can read them off to the person you're recording but they'll feel more relaxed if you don't have a piece of paper in front of you. 3) Record the interview.nbsp; Have fun, ask questions, and don't go over an hour.nbsp; I believe that no man is made to sit longer than an hour in one spot at a time and that goes for interviews and church meetings.nbsp; Remember, the longer you record, the duller it will get and the more work you make for yourself at the editing stage. 4) Take pictures!nbsp; You're on site with your subject so you might as well whip out a camera and take some news worthy photos.nbsp; These are a couple fantastic shots my wife took of my Grandpa and Grandma. [caption id="attachment_1674" align="aligncenter" width="470" caption="photo credit: Natalie Wright"][/caption] 4) Edit the audio.nbsp; Use a free program like Audacity to cut out pauses, poor sound, or just plain boring parts.nbsp; The dullest thing about home videos is not the fact it's not your family but the fact they're not edited.nbsp; Use the same rules.nbsp; Keep it to the point, interesting, and relevant.nbsp; I won't go into how you edit audio here but Audacity can show you the basics.nbsp; I've used a couple programs but I prefer to use Garageband on the Mac. Throw in transitions if you want.nbsp; I included them in this interview instead of having my questions voiced.nbsp; I kept it pretty plain but you may want to throw multiple song clips or sounds into yours. 6) Share your interview with family members on cd's and through online resources.nbsp; Your older audience will appreciate the cd's and your hip young nephew will appreciate your online prowess. My grandparents made a large impact in my life and I love them for the time and attention they paid to me.nbsp; I thoroughly enjoyed talking with them and I hope they like what I've thrown together.nbsp; I hope you find a way to preserve your family history, and if it's through the medium of audio I cheer you on in that effort. We've grown a few years and in different directions but we have plenty in common. In this interview I ask Jeff what it's like being a dry farmer and gunsmith. I'm happy to know there's people like Jeff out there continuing on his family's work by growing food for this nation. In the video below Jeff's the dead-eye shooting the ball out of the air. I've shot many a .22 round on this farm and I'm thankful to Jeff and his Dad for teaching me many things about rifles. What beautiful scenery to shoot in. We open the podcast by telling a little bit about each other, then proceed quickly to the population of Rexburg.nbsp; BYU - Idaho has decided to increase the student population... okay, so we're not burning rubber right off the line. Mandy pines for the days she made lots of money selling candy in a Navy hanger. We're busted by one of the city dispatchers for recording cop talk around Rexburg with Dale, and then Dale proceeds to tell about a domestic dispute that ends in a scary lady making a proposition to him.nbsp; "She looked like she had been through a ringer-washer about a hundred times, and she lost."nbsp; Dallan hopes she was toothless. Jenna's brother recently moved back to Rexburg and he's discovered it's next to impossible to find a job in town.nbsp; Artco laid off a bunch of people and the church (BYU-Idaho) has just installed a hiring freeze.nbsp; She also reveals Rexburg Motor Sports is in financial trouble and possibly going down.nbsp; Dale thinks some of the outside backers are getting concerned and about to bail. Dallan describes Idaho as a three section state with the Boise area, Eastern Idaho, and the Northern skin-head (great golf course) area. Dale states that the government should have given a million dollars to everyone... but Dallan doesn't think that would work.nbsp; Okay, this wasn't so funny. The conclusion is that the economy has hit Rexburg.nbsp; Dallan is surprised that the church entered a hiring freeze, because he feels tithing is continuing to come in. Jenna talks about the difficulty of the job market in Arizona and especially in her area, Maricopa, which is having the problem of no home sales and huge depreciation.nbsp; If you're in the market for a 3,000 sq. ft. home you'll get a screaming deal. Local man died in a farm accident where a one ton hay bale fell on him.nbsp; The discussion then turns into traumatic things that didn't happen at school. Craigslist talk: Mandy has a listing for free juice... yes free juice.nbsp; She found another one where a guy will tear down and haul off fish tanks for you.nbsp; Dallan suggests Dale gets a fish-bowl and see if the guy will come for it.nbsp; Dallan found a listing for roosters you can eat or turn into a pet. Jenna and Mandy both came across a story where a guy wants you to pick up hisnbsp; junk and burn it for him.nbsp; Dale suggests they just burn the whole trailer down.nbsp; Jenna takes the story further by saying on Christmas Eve two guys were hauling a recliner which fell off their truck and half of it wasn't recovered because by the time they noticed and turned around someone had already picked it up... apparently the guy from the burning listing. Dale shares a story of a dump-truck losing his tailgate which hit a car and totaled it.nbsp; This then leads to Beaver Dick park talk and Dallans idea to monetize on the park by selling Beaver Dick Park gear.nbsp; Stay tuned.nbsp; Jenna's husband Blake may bust out artwork we'll be throwing it on t-shirts.nbsp; Dallan suggests they dress Dale up in a coon skin cap and have people pay five bucks to take pictures with him. Dallan continues his quest to find people willing to talk about their unused wedding rings.nbsp; Jenna is in the camp of returning rings if you don't get married, but Mandy clearly thinks you should keep the bling. Mandy still wants to do her "Wedding Dress Party" idea.nbsp; Dallan thinks it's crazy and would be scared if he came home and found his wife and other women dressed in wedding dresses, eating cake... Bank robber turns himself into Rexburg police after robbing banks in Texas. Pizza Hut has sewage leak problem. Pizza Hut was closed down but reopened before it was fixed. Dallan has a tough time reading today. He sounds like an illiterate moron. Barbed Wire Wreath - Dallan found an impressive wreath on Craigslist. Only problem is the thing measures a mere 3 feet across but costs $385. Mandy doesn't seem to be a fan of it. Lily breaths on mike. Mandy comes up with hand engraved rocks. Lily continues to cry. My apologies here. Rocks have different shades. Some stones are authenticated and have dinosaur tracks. Dallan wants to get one with "Rexburbia" blazed into the side of it. They review Dallans rant about Green Canyon and its ability to stay disgusting all these years. Too many negative things to list, but the bathroom is a despised item for both of them. Mandy talks about the inch of water surrounding the womens toilet, and you're not sure if it goes down the toilet when you flush or onto the floor. The word "disgusting" is often used. Horkley's is briefly discussed. Dallan forgot that Joey Hill and her sisters worked there. It seems that you had to be pretty to work there, but no longer is this a rule. Someone once was busted for stealing lottery tickets from there, as a worker. Tanning Salon for sale in Rexburg. Dallan and Mandy pass on it. Dallan regrets not buying a Pepsi machine up in Rexburg while he was there. They remember dad having a soda machine up at Ricks while they were kids. The half-a-cow topic comes up again. A guy in Rexburg wants to trade a cow for a snowmachine. Juvenile fakes kidnapping to see movie. Dallan is most impressed that the police seemed ticked off about having to find this guy who lied about being kidnapped. Dallan thinks most of the cops were happy to have that kind of action on a Monday (home evening) night. The boy wanted to see "Twilight" and not hang with his family. Dallan takes time to clear his phlem on mike. Dallan tries to get Mandy to call a guy about why he's selling his ring. Mandy says if a guy gave her a ring she wouldn't return it if she said no. Natalie also chimed in that she would keep it. Dallan is shocked and bothered they would both do that. Dallan was going to go golfing, but he decides not to. The kids are going crazy. Dallan discusses a movie that was filmed in Rexburg, called "Justin Time." They're not thrilled about it. Mandy found an iPod outside her front door. They looked on it and saw that it was a young girl with riskay photos of her and her boyfriend. Dallan wants her to upload the pictures from it to him, for purposes of the show. Nobody has claimed the iPod. Kelvin won a Playstation 3 at a Pentagon party but they both weren't into it so they traded it for a television and some other things. They talk about Yo Gabba Gabba for a while. One of the originators of the show is from Rexburg, served a mission in Japan, and came up with the idea. Very high production value, good songs, and Dallan loves it. (I watched this with my kids for an hour afterwords).
